Projects Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery

Renowned Gallery redeveloped

At home in "The House of Inspiration"

One of New Zealand’s most important heritage buildings is now one of the country’s most important design stories. GDM was proud to contribute to the narrative, in the beautifully enhanced Gallery’s gift shop.

Prestigious gallery defined by unique elements of design

In a city famous for its creativity and design strength, GDM was the natural choice to contribute to this high-profile project enhancing and redefining a beloved Whanganui landmark. Appeal, functionality, durability and style were all essential considerations when designing the display and fixture systems for the gallery’s gift shop.

Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery’s gift shop showcases the work of talented artists and creatives. GDM met the brief by creating fixtures that complement the design aspects within the gallery’s new wing while displaying the gift shop’s creative goods to full effect. Often the last point of contact for visitors, the gift shop is a final opportunity to enjoy the gallery’s creativity and leaves an impression visitors carry with them. We were thrilled to create this impactful space.

As a project developed under a unique co-design model with iwi and hapū, Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery was one of the first major civic developments of its kind in NZ and the world. This design model recognises the fundamental importance of reflecting indigenous narratives and is responsive to Whanganui’s world-first Te Awa Tupua legislation.

Working on this design-led project was made all the more special by Whanganui’s status as a UNESCO City of Design. GDM is proud to be recognised as a local leader in design manufacturing and to draw inspiration from a city defined by its creativity and innovation.

Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery was named one of the “Top 20 Cultural Hot Spots” in National Geographic’s “Best of The World” list for 2024 and we’re thrilled to see the international recognition the Gallery is attracting.
